Booking and documents to bring

To apply for a learner's permit you visit a DMV office, and the DMV asks you to schedule an appointment for that visit. The DMV handbook points to dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment for booking appointments such as the drive test.

Bring proof of identity and two proofs of California residency; exceptions to the residency rule may apply. If the name on your identity document does not match your application, also bring a legal full name document.

You will be asked for your social security number; exceptions may apply. For REAL ID requirements and the current list of acceptable documents, see dmv.ca.gov/realid.

If you are under 18, bring a certificate of completion or enrollment in driver education. A parent or guardian must sign the application, and if your parents share joint custody, both must sign.

If you hold a driver's license from another country, you follow the same steps as a holder of an out-of-state license, and you must also pass a drive test.
