Knowledge test: how it works

You can start the California Driver's License or ID Card Application online and finish it at a DMV office.

At the office you bring your identity and residency documents, pay the application fee, pass a vision exam and have your photo taken. Then you take the knowledge test.

The knowledge test is multiple choice, and the questions are based on the California Driver's Handbook. You may not use testing aids such as the handbook or a cell phone during the test.

DMV offices stop giving knowledge tests at a set time each day. Check the current cut-off on the DMV Learner's Permits page, and arrive early enough to finish the earlier steps first.

One application gives you three attempts to pass the knowledge test. If you fail three times, you must apply again. Applicants under 18 who fail must wait seven days before trying again, not counting the day of the failed test.

If you are under 18, you also need a certificate of completion or enrollment in driver education, and a parent or guardian must sign your application.
