Permit fees in New York
New York does not list a separate fee for the permit test. The amount shown below is the official total for a first learner permit or driver license. It covers the application fee, the fee for the license class, the document fees, and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) fee if you live in that district.
The total depends on how old you are when you apply and whether you live in the MCTD. The official fee table lists Class D and Class DJ in the same column, "Class D or DJ". The range below covers every age group in that column, with and without the MCTD fee.
The MCTD counties are Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester.
An enhanced driver license or enhanced permit costs an additional fee that is not included in this total.
At a DMV office you can pay with most credit, prepaid or debit cards that do not need a PIN (American Express, Discover/Novus, MasterCard, VISA), with cash, or with a personal check or money order payable to "Commissioner of Motor Vehicles". You can split the payment between cash and check.
